The Beginning (2004–2006)

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, along with Scott Lake and Daniel Weinand after they struggled to build an online snowboard store using existing eCommerce tools. Frustrated by available solutions, they created their own platform and officially launched Shopify in 2006.

At that time, most online stores relied on expensive enterprise solutions or complex open-source software such as Magento and osCommerce.

Shopify introduced:

  • Hosted infrastructure
  • Simple store setup
  • Secure payment handling
  • No server management
  • Subscription pricing model

This was revolutionary for small businesses.

2. Managed Infrastructure

No server maintenance, security patches, or hosting concerns.

3. Massive App Ecosystem

Over 21,000 apps provide solutions for subscriptions, loyalty programs, inventory management, B2B commerce, and AI automation.

4. Enterprise Adoption

Major brands including SKIMS, Supreme, BarkBox, Coach, Birkenstock and Kate Spade use Shopify.

5. Strong Checkout Conversion

Shopify’s checkout is widely regarded as one of the highest-converting checkout experiences in the industry.

6. Omnichannel Commerce

Merchants can sell through:

  • Website
  • Mobile apps
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • Amazon
  • Physical stores
  • B2B portals
  • Wholesale channels

Shopify and AI Commerce

Shopify has aggressively invested in AI technologies including:

  • AI product descriptions
  • AI image generation
  • AI customer support
  • AI sales forecasting
  • AI inventory recommendations
  • Sidekick AI assistant
  • AI search optimization

Shopify leadership believes AI-powered commerce will define the next decade of online retail.

Interestingly, Shopify reported that visitors coming from AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity converted significantly better than traditional search visitors. AI referrals increased nearly 13x year-over-year during 2026.

This is extremely relevant for businesses investing in AEO and GEO strategies.
